My first darkroom product. Exposed for approx 20sec (under scorching sun on adm roof, around 2.58pm, aperture size is the tip of a sewing needle) on RC paper in a self-made pinhole camera. This is the first attempt, with rough estimation on the exposure time, and it turned out kind of "perfect exposure".

The two vertical lines might be light bounced inside my pinhole camera because though the inside was painted black, I didn't cover the area above and below the aperture/hole with black cloth (to absorb light throughoutly), therefore light was reflected from the black shiny (tin) surface.

I also didn't expect the focal length to be so short and the wide-angle, almost panoramic, and so the black tape was anyhow pasted onto the sides of the paper to secure it onto the tin surface. Kind of fish-eye also, maybe because my pin-hole camera is a tin (curved surface).

This is turned positive in photoshop. Can you spot the clouds?

ISO400. Followed the sweet sunny 16 rule, and all the photos taken in the sun turned out fine, except they look more reddish than they should be.

Isn't film so much nicer than digital? But it is a very expensive game. If only money is not an obstacle, and school is not a barrier.

Thirsty Sky did it again, but this is the Fiery version. Is up on exhibition till 3Aug2008 at Peddler's Walk, Clarke Quay. The exhibition venue has colour lights that shine up the place at different time intervals, thus explains the difference in colour you see. Took these with the new f1.8 50mm lens though, quite unsuccessful. I don't know why, the pictures turn out grainy, maybe I gave it the wrong ISO/ASA. 50mm is not an ideal lens for event like this, as you can see, I can't capture the whole "gallery". 28mm will definitely be better, and it needs to be fast.

This is what I like about lenses with small f-numbers. f1.8 is not that small though, I will really like a f1.2 if I can afford it. Wider depth-of-field and turning the lights into circular shapes of blur, I really like it. Not even colour adjustment is done for this.

When testing out the new lens, I would not leave out food. Paisley and Cream's Cupcakes are pretty (and the shop seldom has business? everytime I passed by there was no customer) so I chose them. Took this at f1.8 full force. The disadvantage of such wide dof, can't see the other one. The staffs were very kind though, didn't mind me taking a lot of photos at the display fridge. As for food review, first bite = 4 out of 5 stars. Last few bites = 0 out of 5 stars. The decorations you see on top of these cupcakes are something in-between sugar and cream which made it kind of overwhelming and vomit-inducing when you were trying to finish everything off plate. I could not swallow the last few bites though.

Meanwhile, everything is kept in a DIY dry cabinet with thirsty hippos and silica gels. I wonder if they'll get too dry. Honestly, I don't even know if thirsty hippos can work harmlessly.

Will try them out next week with the lomographers.

Farm visits at Lim Chu Kang Agrotech Park, aka Kranji Countryside. Very quiet and serene environment. Lunch was great at Bollywood Veggies, especially its asam curry which I gave 2 thumbs up. We were eating outdoor which was very much like dining in the garden, and it wasn't hot at all. Chocolate goat milk at Hay Dairies caused me half an hour of stomachache, but nonetheless feeding the goats made me "ernie, the generous". Their lips were soft and warm, not that I kissed them haa. Fireflies Health Farm gave us the illusion that it breed fireflies, and the rows of tents ie. greenhouses made the plants look like refugees.

To get to Kranji Countryside, take the Kranji Express Shuttle Bus from Kranji MRT Station which comes in hourly interval, or bus 975 from the bus-stop near Choa Chu Kang MRT Station.

"Staging Photos" photography workshop in art museum. Speaker was local photographer Tan Ngiap Heng. He recommended colour gels for flash and lightings because the bluish light isn't suitable for all conditions. I like his observations on film photography with panoramic shots, shadows and lightings, space, textures and colours. The first photo is my food sculpture for 3D design module. Almost cracked my brain when coming up with ideas on how to make food look good with flow direction, form and what-not, and also, it must be innovative enough in terms of food-serving. The thing is, food, isn't something easy to work with in the first place. With the huge variety available, and the nature of food itself, I think it's necessary for us to have a good understanding of food first, before we can come up with brilliant concepts?! This idea came just a few days before the deadline, you have no idea how much food I've wasted before and after that... guilty. The more I look at it, the more I like this idea. Though a bit bhb, at least I didn't succumb to sticking food together. And I like the fact that it's easy to prepare, and the overall presentation of something that's suppose to look cheap & messy (it's hotdog btw) looked classy and expensive. The second photo is on concavity.

A bit sad that this module is over, because I think it's the only module I've taken so far that makes sense in terms of design, and the lecturer is like the most talented designer. Really learned a lot from him, not just in designing stuff, but also the patience to observe designs, and how to look at them like they're some jewels or what (even though from the first look, you know it's crap, but he can still give the designs chances and try to find good stuff out of them *applause*). My poly lecturers wouldn't have known (my guess) that by learning 3D design could improve our graphic design skills. It's amazing that he can linked 3D up with almost everything, including photography, and it makes sense. Wow.

Final 4D assignment on System Art. Mine's titled "Transition-Void-Transition-Void-Transition", where I video-taped the transition between the ending of tv programmes & starting of the national anthem music video, and ending of the national anthem music video & the starting of what comes after that. Also, I captured the transitions with actionsampler, which i cut the individual frames up and pasted them on the wall into a line. Learned a lot on conceptual art from this module. Only if I've taken this module earlier, my poly's experimental design would have been much much easier.

Learned lots of interesting stuff like people froze their poses, treating you like you're invisible (just so they look more natural in photos) when they saw the photographer near them. Hahas. My uncle's death has made me think a lot. "The issue of life and death" can't summarize my many-thoughts, in fact I think it's superficial to say "attending funeral makes you think about the issue of life and death". There is far too much for a person to feel/discover/think/reflect/witness in a funeral, especially a relative's one, and everything is just too overwhelming. The ways people of different ages perceive death, the ways people react in a funeral, may it be concealing their feelings, treating it as a time for family reunion, or even as a chance to gamble or is it a way of distraction from the solemness, I can't really tell.

I just left the funeral feeling a pain in my throat. Might be the cause of grief or heatiness or I simply couldn't speak out. There were far too many words left unsaid in the past, and many people can sense that. It's too late now. Tears can't stop yet, it's painful to witness all that, if only this is the last funeral I attend.

My cousins are old enough to know what's going on, but still young to bear the burden of a lost in the family...

To be true to self and embrace sadness or putting on a brave front which everyone wants to see?

I think only melancholic can truly feel the-should-be-way in a funeral/for the direct relatives. Happy people won't know. To add up to that, my classmates thought I made up the story of attending my uncle's funeral in order to skip lessons. How naive of them and of myself.

Some of the works, including this, done for this module called 3D. It is also the only design-related foundation module that is different from poly, which I think is pretty useful and beneficial when it comes to producing good design. Like the exercise with styrofoam is about hierarchy, the one with artcard is about flow, which include form, contrast and looking at the model with interesting angles all-round.

Borrowed a photography book from school library - Robert Frank's "Storylines". Went wikipedia.com to search for his biography, and found a review he received in the early days: "meaningless blur, grain, muddy exposures, drunken horizons and general sloppiness". Struck dumb me, I like the blurriness and muddy exposures.

1 is the loneliest number that you'll ever do -- Slept at 6pm, woke up at 1.40am, and had 2.5 consecutive nights without rest. 5.35am now, decided not to sleep at 3am because I really need time for myself. Surfing net since 2am, have been missing the old days since 20 hours ago. The past seems to be prettier than the present, don't you think. Still listening to Travis since 4am, "Writing to Reach You" playing at 5.45am, which describes my feelings well, now it's "3 Times and You Lose" at 5.47am. 40 minutes before getting ready for school, now it's 5.50am by the way. I'm left with 39 minutes, now 38 minutes to be in mental tremor again. 36 minutes. I will remain here for 0.5 hour more. Now it's 6.02am. Some parts of myself says I'm tired, I feel terrible. I had a dream where my best friends and myself went to eat satays at an imaginative place, it cheered me up a lot, and then armageddon happened. Now it's 6.07am, "Writing to Reach You" is playing again. "3 Times and You Lose" at 6.12am. I woke up with 3 sms-es and 1 missed call, and I replied 1 almost immediately because I felt no obligation. 6.21am, people are starting to wake up, and I'm already a commuter in my mind. 6.27am. A Large-sized MOS-Burger Milk Tea stands before me, no longer cold. 6.29am.

School will start with the first lesson of Introduction to the Study of Literature. To think Lit was one of my fearless subjects, the idea of being introduced to Lit again, or simply the Intro to the Study of it is puzzling. Perplexing yet comforting, because Lit had never been much of a problem, and the art of analysis had been captivating, except the humongous number of quotations I had to memorise. I so loved Lit to the extend that I searched around for William Shakespeare to take a picture with him, in Madame Tussauds. But it might not be what I hope to see.

Come to think of it, the knowledge of Eng Lit given to me has always been useful, otherwise I might not be able to appreciate classics such as To Kill A Mocking Bird. Continuous reading proves my point, however, I might go on hiatus very soon, or switch to read non-fiction instead. Reading is good, but a reading marathon hinders my thinking. I proved it last year. Studying the books is one step further than reading them.

Went there twice. The first time was disastrous, at least in my humble opinion. Humble? Except for the Chinese-herbs hotpot dinner courtesy of some deacon/pastors/elder or 1 deacon/pastor/elder, I can't remember. The next fabulous thing was the comfy queen-sized bed in Hotel Rosa Passadena. And I still have the hotel brochure and namecard filed neatly in a black file, because I would like revisit the place very much. Anyhow it was a 2 days 1 night recce trip, fully sponsored, I think.

It was catastrophic because throughout the 18 hours car journey, I only had a Jason Mraz CD with me. At that time, there was no such thing as MP3 player. It was so unbearable that even until now, I can't bring myself to listen to Jason Mraz. I could have pulled out the earphones and chat with the people around me, but it was difficult, to me at least. There wasn't anything I could find to talk to pastors and elders, and it made my presence quite embarrassed because afterall I belonged to the young adult section. Well, I didn't usually talk to them and vice versa because we didn't spend that much time together or interact that much in church. So, you know. Haa. Anyway, I felt obliged to go because I held a position of responsibility in the organising committee. And yes, it does sound humiliating now, I know. My apologies.

Alright, that's a brief part 1 of the recce trip. Amazingly, part 2 is still sitting in Pooh's PC. We shall see if part 2 would reappear in the WWW.

Moving on, my second visit to the place, the real thing. Well, before that, I went to purchase some prizes and equipments for the numerous games I designed. With the help of a friend, we went to Cold Storage to buy many cups of Nissin noodles and probably some tidbits. Then to Muji, or did we went to Muji first then to Cold Storage, I can't remember. Anyway, we bought plenty of stuff in Muji to a point that someone suspected Muji as our sponsor for prizes. Ok. Should I start from the day of departure? Perhaps no, because I'm lazy for a memory test.

All in all, it wasn't as fun as I thought it would be, mainly due to my poor condition. There was a time when I was squeezing in a lift with an invited pastor, or elder I forgot, together with some other people. I remembered I was being introduced to him then and avoiding eye contact with him at almost the same time, fearing he might have the ability to read my mind. It was all because of my enormous sense of guilt. The only time when I felt really comfortable was when I sneaked into 老大's room to fool around, but my actual intention was to seek something else. It was also then that I found out Sg's M&M's were cheaper than M'sia's. Yup, not that it wasn't important. It was also during that time that I came up with the decision that made some people puzzled and sad. But in actual, that decision was already made months ago prior to the trip, and it was just a matter of time.

The decision was strengthened when I attended the dinner to celebrate the success of that retreat. I think there's a name for it but I can't remember. Well, at that point of time, I just couldn't wait any longer and therefore everything was done in a speedy manner.

Ah well, looks like I still have the ability to write a blog entry. Anyway, the photo was taken there. I love the tea plantation and it was so surreal. The photo's green is as green in reality, made possible in photoshop. Nice. By the way, the cabbages there were the crunchiest and the blended strawberry with ice was yummy! I really recommend pooh to go there, u won't regret man!! Think steamboat!! *Psycho* *Psycho*

As much as we always called it Marina Bay, I think its actual name is Marina South. To me, flying kite is fun only when it is windy. When the wind decides to be a spoilsport, only pooh's kite can soar together with the alfamous Bowman's tie. I can still remember when we purposely missed the last bus to MRT station, and spent a tiring night over the bowling centre and coast. The pathetic points we got from our bowling stunts, the hooker and hookee smooching on the bowling seats, the twinkling stars that won our admirations over, the red night sky that resembled red bean soup, the cosy temperature (to me only) and the radio, so much to occupy us for a night that we never stayed over after the second time.

凌晨12點的公園﹐兩個男生﹐一對情侶﹐一個中年人﹐幾罐啤酒﹐幾個夢想﹐幾句甜言蜜語﹐幾分親熱﹐幾分孤寂﹐無聲無臭。離開他們的視線﹐我只想安靜的坐著休息。很疲憊。一陣陣的冷風像是閃爍的星星派來嘲笑的。耳邊不斷重複的歌在催淚﹐很諷刺。我不適合白天﹐應為陽光不應該浪費在我身上。我也不適合人群﹐應為這張醜陋的臉不應該污穢眼睛。我更不適合活著﹐應為身邊的人或許不會更快樂﹐但一定不會更煩惱。應該建造一個更堅強更聰明更討喜的我﹐而不是我。面對死亡天使時﹐我不會反抗﹐只求這時刻能迅速到來。討厭我的人﹐委屈了﹐我無法改變我的存在和仍然活著的命運。

檳榔西施. How could I not take a photo of 檳榔西施 when I was in Taiwan? I held up my 300D and just as I was about to press the shutter button, my sis warned me that there might be the 檳榔西施's 黑道老大 around. And if I were to take a photo of his 漂亮小姐, there would be a chance that this 黑道老大 would think I was a press reporter (think of the 300D hanging from my neck) and that I would either publish his 小姐's photo on papers or send it to the police. I guess either way I would offend the 黑道老大. Heck. As it I care about what 老大. The audacious me took these two photos, ah*hem making sure they had nothing to do with the black triad.

This is the first time this photograph caught my attention.

照片是我拍的。05年的12月26日。聖誕節後的一個中午。
放這張照片在這裡不是為了要炫耀。這里也不是一個讓我炫耀的地方。
只是﹐這是我第一次認真和仔細的看這張兩年前的照片。
很意外﹐驚訝也很慚愧。
也反映出這些年來我攝影的醜陋目的。
我沒有欺負這小朋友﹐沒有跟他說話﹐沒有留意他在干嘛﹐。肯定不是在做壞事就對。
找到了一個滿意的攝影角度就拍﹐然後走人。
甚至還忘記自己有拍過這張照片。
記得以前不了解為何有攝影師能眼巴巴地看悲劇發生也不放下攝影機去幫助那些面臨死亡的人。
我還不是一樣。
應該做的事情有很多﹐如果小朋友能笑著看照相機﹐這就會成為一張有意義的相片。

It's so true that people don't usually realize the presence of bass guitar in songs. I've listened to live band playing without bass guitar and it sounded incomplete. Such a powerful musical instrument and yet people ignore it unless it goes solo. Most of the time, drums coexist with bass guitar. Next time, listen to the bass-es, not just the vocals, in your mp3 player.

After reading so much, I forgot how to write. After listening so much, I forgot how to speak. After feeling so much, I forgot how to remember. Penning and erasing. Typing and deleting. I'm not letting myself off.

From bass to screaming, andante to allegro, I know their tricks. The art of singing. Only my ears and his voice. Not even the smackings and strummings come inbetween. The privilege of listening up-close to this voice makes me feel embarrassed. Still, there's someone who can sing better. I'm all ears.

尼龍弦吉他/古典吉他沒有貼紙的表面。背面也沒有貼紙。黑色的外套好像曾經有掛上一隻會飛的天使貓。好久不見的朋友的外套則掛上一隻粉紅豬。重點不是外表。G弦脫皮了﹐其它的生鏽。不會的人聽不出它越來越有個性的聲音。它生存的意義是為人服務而不是令人聽出耳油。其實我要寫的不是吉他也不是彈吉他的人。是聽的人。
沒有選擇性聽我彈吉他的人就像久沒彈奏的樂譜。就連在夢里也不例外。
